Why your affirmations might not be working
You decided that you’re fed up. You’ve had enough. You’re tired of feeling the way you do and you’re ready to correct course and change direction. You’ve been using affirmations and mantras day in an day out, trying to “look on the bright side of things” and still there’s no change. Things are exactly the same as they were before- possibly even worse- and now you’re feeling even more frustrated and bamboozled. Everyone keeps talking about living in gratitude, repeating affirmations to yourself and things will 'magically' fall into place so why isn’t this stuff working for you?
Because you’re not being honest.
Affirmations and mantras aren’t just about the words you say, but the feelings behind the words. You can repeat all day long until the cows come home that you deserve all the success and abundance in the world, but if deep down inside you don’t back that statement up with the matching feelings, your efforts will almost always feel pointless. You end up in a cycle of conflict and feeling worse because what you tell yourself and what you truly believe and feel aren’t in alignment with each other.
We have a tendency to go from one end of the spectrum to the complete opposite end, wanting to skip the important space in between. Be truthful and be easy with yourself. If you’ve been living in a state of lack and feeling unworthy, sure you can wake up one day and see everything as rainbows and unicorns, but the average person has some healing and work to do to get to that point. Honor that process. Perhaps you need time to work up to the affirmation “I am good enough” because you’re still working through stepping into your personal power and until then what feels right is “the thought of feeling good about myself today makes me feel ‘fill-in-the-blank.”
When you allow yourself to be truthful and use the right affirmation for your situation, it should cause feelings of excitement, joy and happiness. It should make you want to take action. It should make you stand just a little bit taller with your chest out just a little bit farther. If it doesn’t make you feel good and you don’t believe it, don’t use it.
Over to you...
What are your thoughts on affirmations? Do you use them and if so what’s one of your favorites? Share in the comments.
